Emergency routes and exits must be indicated by signs, and emergency routes and exits requiring illumination must be provided with emergency lighting of adequate intensity in the case of failure of their normal lighting.
It is a statutory requirement, as part of The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, that all businesses must have emergency lighting. This is to allow the safe and efficient evacuation of all people on the premises in the event of an emergency.
Current UK regulations require the provision of horizontal illuminance at floor level on the centre line of a defined escape route not less than 0.2 lux. In addition, for escape routes of up to 2m wide, 50% of the route width should be lit to a minimum of 0.1 lux.
Emergency lighting checks can be performed out of working hours to avoid disturbing your working day.
